Swing Bed

What is a Swing Bed?

Medina Regional Hospital is proud to offer a swing bed rehabilitation program tailored to meet your needs. Your community hospital has 25 beds available for swing bed use. Our staff of caring nurses, therapists, and technicians will provide for your needs with care and respect.

We provide full-service therapy for physical, occupational, or speech training with a highly skilled staff that will give you one-on-one service. The swing bed program may be appropriate for patients who have experienced stroke, joint replacement or other orthopedic surgeries, hip fracture, neurological disorders, amputation, or general debility associated with chronic illness or weakness. Our program can also assist patients with pain control or medication regulation.

The swing bed program, sometimes referred to as skilled nursing, is a special program reserved for rural hospitals with fewer than 100 beds. The swing bed program allows you to recover from an accident, illness, or surgery in a close-to-home facility. Patients may remain in skilled care as long as there is a documented need for that level of care.

How are services paid for?

Swing bed services are reimbursed by Medicare and most insurance companies. Insurance benefits will be verified prior to admission.

Any time you require nursing care or therapy following an illness, injury, or surgery, you may be eligible for swing bed care. These are some examples:

Post-Stroke Therapy

Stroke patients may transfer from acute care to swing bed in order to receive physical, occupational, and speech therapy after three days in an acute care setting.

Post-Acute IV Therapy

Patients who have received three days of acute care and now require long-term skilled nursing services associated with the administration of IV medications can remain enrolled in swing bed.

Post-Surgery Therapy

Patients who undergo orthopedic surgical procedures that will require physical therapy may transfer to swing bed three days after the surgical procedure. Skilled nursing care, along with physical, occupational, and speech therapy, is available under the swing bed program.

Nutrition/Diabetes Education

A certified diabetes educator is available for patients with a new diagnosis or those who have questions or concerns regarding their chronic diabetes. A nutrition consult is provided for each admission. Optimal nutrition is important in recovery and continued health. We also offer nutritional support, education, and customized diets/menus to meet your personal preference and dietary needs.
